Fuzzy Unfurling in Spring
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a WHAT? I know you want to touch it, but this fern that just popped its head out of the ground and needs some space to grow.
Bracken fern is a perennial fern occurring globally in dry to wet forests, meadows, clearings, sandy soils, roadsides, lake-shores, bogs, and burned areas. The underground stems or rhizomes are deep, giving it the ability to survive intense fires. Fiddleheads emerge in early spring. Even before the leaves unfurl, the division of the stem into 3 parts is apparent. At the top of the stem is a whorl of 3 leaves (fronds), each 2 or 3 times compound and generally triangular in outline. The leaf blade is 2 to 4 feet long and 1 to 3 feet wide. The leaves are held nearly erect to almost horizontal, parallel to the ground.
